Innovative Team Building Singapore

DISC Team Building

October 5th, 2006

Team Building with DISC
DISC helps participants find out more about themselves, it also helps them learn about their team mates. DISC also help participants learn how to work with and communicate with their team mates, and also in the area of job specialisation and career planning.

In short, DISC helps us in the following areas:
1. Better understand our own strengths and weaknesses for personal growth
2. Better understand the strengths and weaknesses of our team members
3. Learn how to communicate, motivate and influence different team members
4. Learn how to allocate different tasks to different team members

DISC Behaviour Profile
DISC behaviour profile is one of the oldest form of behavioural profiling instrument that is widely used by corporations around the world today, in the areas of recruitment, job placement, team building and conflict resolution. In our experience, it is easy to understand, apply, remember and also highly accurate. The DISC behaviour profile is a self-assessment tool, meaning it is a person’s own perception of himself, making it undisputedly accurate to the subject and it serves as a tool to help understanding of personalities of team members.

Dr. Willaim Marston
DISC was first introduced by Dr. William Moulten Marston in 1926 when he wrote a book called, “Emotions of Normal People”. Inside his book, he explained that there are 4 main personality traits in the world today, namely, “Dominance”, “Influence”, “Steadiness” & “Compliance”.

Dr. Marston is a Psychologist was an expert in human behaviour who was ahead of his time. He was an activist for women’s rights and he believed that deep down inside them, people wanted to see women in power. Thus he created the comic series, “Wonder Woman”, under the pen name “Charles Marston”, which became a hit with readers.

His deep passion for human behaviour also led him to invent the early lie detector, which later evolved to become the polygraph machine.

Though certain behavioural traits are direct opposites, it does not mean that a person can only posses one of them and not the other, it just means that he behaves differently in different circumstances.

DISC Profiling Instrument
The DISC profiling instrument that we use are original 32-paged DISC booklets from USA, from the world’s largest publisher of DISC materials. Dr. Sandy Kulkin and his team has translated the booklets into 10 languages. It has been applied in team development, training, career development, consulting, conflict management and recruitment (as well as other management areas) all over the world.

Dominance
People with the ‘D’ trait are usually described as dominant, decisive & direct. They are task focused people who make quick decision and usually have good intuition. They have high-ego strength, are self-starters and risk takers, though they can sometimes be demanding to themselves and their team mates. They are usually the natural leaders in a team.

The ’D’ person is the one that you can dump on a deserted island and visit him one year later to find a bungalow with a farm and probably a swimming pool built from scratch, or you may find that he has already found his way back to his own home. They are determined and tenacious workers that have the ability to get the job done.

‘D’ people are also natural leaders who have the ability to push their team to extraordinary levels. These are the people that will initiate changes and introduce new activities to boost team performance.

Influence
The ‘I’ trait person is one who is influencing, interested in people and interactive. I people love to communicate, they are good motivators, encouraging, usually humorous and interesting to talk to and they are the life of the party. In a team, they are often play the role of a motivational leader.

‘I’ personality people loves to make new friends, they are the “social butterfly” that have hundreds, if not thousands, of phone numbers stored in their handphones and are hoping from party to party. Sometimes you will find ‘I’ people walking around the carpark looking for their car as they are also known to be careless with details, as they are usually distracted with conversation or other more interesting thoughts.

The ‘I’ leader is the motivational leader who is positive, creative and fun to work with. The ‘I’ person will say,
teambuilding? Sounds fun, let’s do it!”.

Steadiness
The ‘S’ people are typically steady, stable & secure. ‘S’ people are also extremely loyal, often staying in an antagonistic environment for a long time. They are also patient, good listeners, excellent team players and are able good with relations. You will hardly find an ‘S’ person screaming and shouting at anybody, they will usually give in rather than argue, however, ‘S’ people are also reputed to hold grudges.

The ‘S’ leader is one that is patient, understanding and are often able to gain the trust of the team. The ‘S’ person will be the ones that will suggest including families for dinner after the team building session, some of them may be reluctant to go for team building sessions as they may resist any unfamiliar situation.

Compliance
As the name suggests, ‘C’ people are correct, controlled and compliant. If there is a rule to follow, they will be the first to follow. If there are no rules, they will make one for you. ‘C’ people are perfectionists, systematic and usually religiously clean and neat. The ‘C’  people are easy to spot in the office, just take a walk around the office and look for the neat and clean tables and people with exceptionally neat handwriting. In any team, ‘C’ people are the quality control people who will check everything twice to ensure the highest possible standards.

The ‘C’ leader is meticulous, fair and strives for perfection. The ‘C’ leader is able to teach, lead and guide team members by hand holding them until they are able to perform at an almost perfect standard.

Indoor Team Building

October 5th, 2006

Indoor team building games are immensely popular as corporate team building games, especially when we do not want to go through the hassle of moving the participants from one location to another. It is also good to do indoor team building when we do not have enough time for participants to get changed or facilities for participants to wash up after the team building session. Indoor team building session DO NOT have to be boring. In fact, indoor team building can sometimes be more interesting and exciting to some participants!

änergy builder
One of the most popular and effective indoor team building activity is the Structure Building Game. Through this game, we are able to touch on a number of learning values, including creativity, communication, planning, delegation of duties, adaptability, initiative… etc. To find out more about this game, you can search for the terms “structure building teambuilding”.

änergy brains, brawn & bucks
Another very well received indoor teambuilding game is the änergy brains, brawn & bucks, or änergy b-cube in short. This game was inspired by Dr. Howard Gardner’s research on Multiple Intelligences. It run like a Taiwanese game show, in English, and it helps participants realise that people are all intelligent in different areas, and help create mutual respect among participants, which is a very crucial ingredient of teamwork.

änergy paramount conquest
One of the most interesting (and most complex) indoor team building game that we have created is the änergy paramount conquest. Paramount Conquest is a real-life board game designed for teaching participants about important lessons in teamwork, like detailed planning, leadership, delegation of duties, communication, compromising in a team, patience and respect.

Many people have the misconception that board games are slow and boring but on the contrary, this game is exciting and it will get your adrenaline pumping even though it is run entirely indoors. Participants will end up standing on their feet rather than sitting down while playing this game. There are also a number of smaller activities that go on while the game is being played that require participants to move around a little. They will also (be made to) huddle together and singing songs aloud.

desert survival
One of the best team building game that teaches on the effectiveness of working in a team is the desert survial game. Desert Survival will help participant experience the fact that working in teams improves the results of a given problem (most of the time). In the rare cases of the team’s result performing poorer than the individual, we are also able to identify probable causes of the team. Desert Survival is mentally stimulating and interesting as it involves some intelligent guessing, as well as convincing others that your answer is right.

Beach Teambuilding

October 4th, 2006

Somehow teambuilding + sun + sea + sand = FUN to many of our participants. One of the most popular venues to have teambuilding sessions is at the beach, in Singapore, there are only a few beaches big enough to do this.

Obviously the place where we conduct most of our teambuilding is at Sentosa Island. Other possible venues with beaches include East Coast Park, Changi Beach Park and St John’s island.

We have 3 main teambuilding activities that is suitable for the beach:
änergy beach-a-thon
One of the most popular game that we have conducted in Singapore, as well as at Club Med Bintan & Berjaya Resort in Langkawi is the änergy beach-a-thon. This teambuidling game comprises of a series of teambuilding telematches that are fun and yet requires a little strategic planning. Most of our participants get very engage in this game. It can however be a little physically demanding, but we can control that through the choice of games and through the frequency and duration of breaks given.

änergy unite
Another popular game to paly on the beach is our unite series of beach games. Modified from team sports, this series of teambuilding game feature popular games like soccer, captain’s ball, hockey and rounders, all with a twist! The rules of the games are also modified so as to ensure participants learn to rely on one another and also strategy is involved in the game play.

sand castle challenge
Our latest addition to our beach teambuidling games is the Sand Castle Competition. The sand castle building challenge is an new game that excites both fun loving gentlemen and ladies! It also requires the use of brains, as well as a little of brawn. to effectively erect a nice looking castle from the sand may seem easy at first but when the building starts and the clock ticks away, there are many areas to be taken care of. Teams will be given a lesson on castle building and how to use the different tools before being given time to compete in sand castle building. Winning sand castles will have to be neat and grand and that requires a team of dedicated players to complete.

Sometimes we do have an additional segment to reward participants who are able to “bomb” the competing sandcastles.

Our beach teambuidling games are completely mobile and we are able to bring the games to your preferred location. As mentioned, we are pretty used to whipping out our games from our suitcases - sometimes (but preferably not) at short notice.

You can find out about other interesting teambuilding programs here
Teambuilding Sepcialist.

Video Production Teambuilding

September 28th, 2006

Ever wanted to be an actor? This dream, if we did have it, is unlikely going to be our profession for the majority of us. Most of us see the glamour of being a movie star, forgetting the fact that the making of a movie takes the concerted effort of a whole team of professionals with different talents.

Directors, actors, script writers, storyboardists and camera crew all play a unique yet crucial role in the success of the movie.

In our video production teambuilding, participants will be given a crash course on movie production. As a team, they will have to assign roles, then invent a script and storyboard and proceed to produce a movie clip according to a specific theme. With the help of video editors, the raw footages are then edited to professional looking video clips that are submitted for judging.

Video production teambuilding is an ideal activity for people who what to let their hair down and pull crazy stunts on video, it also breaks barriers as the team put their heads together to come out with a creative script to literally out perform the competition.

This activity can be a little more costly due to the rental of video equipment and editors, nevertheless, the investments will be worthwhile as the video clips will bring back fond memories in years to come.

Teambuilding Through Combat Simulation Games

September 27th, 2006

One of the newest teambuilding activities in Singapore is Combat Simulation Teambuilding (Of course the Singapore Armed Forces has been unknowingly doing it for a decade or more). When we say new, we mean it is available to the public and corporations.

Anergy is proud to have brought in Combat Simulation technology from Australia for the purpose of teambuilding and recreation to Singapore in early part of this year. This business unit has been fairly well received and many corporations like BP, Shell, Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise, Saxo Capital Markets, Oracle & Starhub (as well as many others) have tried this exciting new game.

Combat Simulation Teambuilding or Combat Shooting Teambuilding utilises infra-red technology, therefore the game does not involve any projectile. The guns emit a infra-red beam that is received by sensors mounted on the players’ harnesses. Upon receiving the infra-red beams, the guns will register a hit by sounding a groan through a speaker mounted in it and reducing one life off its LCD screen and also disabling the gun for 2 seconds. Once a player’s life runs out, the gun will go, “Ahhhhhhh….” (long agonising groan), the gun will be disabled & the LCD will show “DEAD”. The player then returns to his base to be “respawn” (get his gun reset), which allows him to join the game after a 10 second delay.

For those of us who have served time in the army before, this system is much like the MILES sets that our army use for battalion proficiency test. The main difference is that the range of our systems are slightly shorter, at about 100 to 120m for the bigger guns, compared to the few hundred meter range of the army systems.

The excitement of this game however, is no lesser. While playing this game, you will realise that you have to act and behave like a well trained army in order for your team to win. Planning, communication and execution will all play a part in determining the winning team. The different scenarios available also tests the ability of the teams to discuss and arrive at a feasible solution to a given problem.

We currently have 35 guns in our armoury. We are in the process of getting additional guns towards the end of this year, which will increase our arsenal to 50 weapons. More sophisticated weapons will also be brought in next year, increasing our ability to create new scenarios for our clients.

When they arrive, we will be posting more updates here, so stay tuned.

Car Rally Style Teambuilding

September 26th, 2006

Singapore has a unique multi-racial society - and an even more interesting multi-racial F&B industry. One very interesting teambuilding activity is to do a car rally with a food theme in Singapore (this is more for team bonding, but we can have a mixture of team bonding tasks as well as teambuilding tasks).

Teams will either car pool or mini-van pool and we will send them on a journey to explore the finest mind blowing food race they will every play around Singapore.

To our overseas friends, this game will be a mouth watering experience (eye-watering as well for some of them). Some famous food that they can savour are:

Curry fish head - an indian cuisine that originated from Singapore, where huge fish heads, with their eyes intact are cooked in indian curry, together with lady’s finger (a vegetable), brinjal, onions and other spices. You will be surprised at the amount of meat that is on a fish’s head. Of course the challenge here is to get  everyone to finish the curry fish head.

Creative Pratas - Singaporean prata chefs have come up with a wide range of different flavoured pratas, including & not limited to: banana, chocolate, butter, durian…. etc.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle - Another savoury dish that is reported to have originated from Singapore. This is one of my personal favourites, if you visit Singapore and did not try out this dish, then you must visit Singapore again just to try out this dish! Authentic fried hokkien prawn noodle is cooked with yellow noodles and thick bee hoon. Today, most hawkers fry this dish with thin bee hoon, which is much easier to fry as it takes a much shorter time for the seasoning to get into the think bee hoon as compared to it’s fatter cousin.

Other ingredients for this dish include: prawns (of course!), squid, spring onions, sliced pork belly meat and last but not least pork lard (some stalls do not use the last 2 ingredients). Yes, I agree with you that this sounds very unhealthy, hey, so is lagsana and pizza right? No one is asking you to eat this everyday, and nobody ever said this is going to be a healthy game right?

Next on the list is Black Pepper Crab & Chilli Crab. If you try this at the right places in Singapore (the right places are not always the restaurants) you will realise that you will not taste anything like this in any other part of the world. The Chilli Crab originated from Singapore, black pepper crab I’m not too sure, but who cares? They both taste heavenly, so just try both if you do come to Singapore.

Now if budget permits, you can also try out live seafood from some of the restaurants in Singapore. If you know where to look, it will also be alarmingly low priced.

There is another dish that cannot be ignored, which is Hainanese Chicken Rice. This dish is basically what its name suggests - chicken, with rice. The chicken is steamed and the rice is exceptionally fragrant. It is also steamed, but may be a little oily for those of you who are expecting healthily steamed rice. However, the magical thing about this dish is neither the chicken or the rice, it is the chilli sauce that you eat this dish with. It is spicy and a little sour, but when eaten with chicken rice, the aroma is simply beyond words.

We can’t exactly say that this delicacy originated from Singapore, but you should be able to find a lot of people selling it here, especially along Balestier Road.

You may be wondering, so what does all these have to do with teambuilding? Nothing. Remember we mentioned at the top of this article that this game is more for team bonding? If you really like this game but would still like to do some teambuilding with your colleagues, then we will customise it to include some teambuilding sessions on top of the eating stations. In that way, you will be able to sample the sumptuous food in Singapore, and also team build with your colleagues.

Structure Building Teambuilding

September 25th, 2006

Structure building games has been around for decades. However, these are one of the most effective teambuilding games around. It is also highly versatile, with the ability to be conducted indoors and outdoors. It is also not physical, even though the game is very hands-on and requires physically building something.

A simple search on the web will tell you that there are many variations, from those using styrofoam cups and plates, different paper materials to even spaghetti and marsh mellow. What is more important is how the game is conducted, how observations are being made and last of all how the debrief helps participants.

From our experience gain from conducting this game, we are able to pick out exceptionally good behaviour from participants. We are also able to give participants pointers on how to improve their teamwork while tackling problems.

We have a few variations of this game to choose from:

1.Tower Construction
2. Sand Castle Building
3. Bridge Builders
4. LEGO Warriors
The different options listed above will have different physical rating and difficulty level, thereby focusing on different areas of teamwork.

Tower Construction is one of our most used option, this option can be conducted almost anywhere and is able to focus on various aspects of teamwork.

Sand Castle Building is slightly more physical then the rest as it is usually done at the beach (exposed to the weather elements).

Bridge Builders and LEGO warriors are more creative challenges where participants will have to crack their heads abit to make their structures work.
